Series: Remarkable Views of Bridges in the Various Provinces Publisher: Eijudo Fine early impression, fine color and condition. For another impression, see Mathi Forrer, "Hokusai Prints and Drawings" 1991 Prestel-Verlag at Cat. No. 34. Here, it is winter, and in the only snow scene from this series of bridges, travelers cross a bridge made from boats moored side by side crossing the Tone River at Sano in Kozuke province to the northwest of Edo. This bridge did not exist during Hokusai's time, but was a popular subject of poetry during the medieval period. One such poem describing the snowstorm at a ferry, according the Matthi Forrer, may have inspired the artist to create this image. Early impressions of this print have a yellow title cartouche, with the sky printed in bokashi from black to grey, sometimes in a clear grey to the top of the distant hills. Later impressions have the title cartouche printed in red.
